You be happy.

I read this from the book "Mojo: How to Get It, How to Keep It, How to Get It Back if You Lose It". The author Marshall Goldsmith said, "I've asked thousands of parents around the world this question. When my child grows up, what do I want my child to be? One word comes up in the answer more than every other word combined, no matter what country I'm in. Happy. You want your children to be happy. You want your parents to be happy. You want the people that love you to be happy. You want the people at work to be happy. You go first. You be happy. They want you to be happy. So one of the things that I talked about in the book is one of the important reasons to do this is not just for ourselves but for other people."

It is a very important message, but it took me 20 years to internalize it. Hope it comes faster for you.

Happy Holidays!

OverParenting is 5 years old today!

I was asked this morning when this blog was started. To my surprise, my first post was written exactly 5 years ago on Feb 22, 2005. Reflecting on these years, I am thankful for feedback from many of you and especially grateful for people acknowledging value and information provided here.

Over the years, I met many great parents and I have utmost respect for them. It turns out this whole parenting thing is a journey of discovering what is important in life. My younger son turned 17 yesterday. The other day, I asked him what his definition of success is. He told me that success means you made a difference. I thought his answer was very inspiring. I suddenly have the confidence that he will be alright and I am very proud of who he becomes.
